Outdoor Cinema & Sunset Dinner in Santorini

June 18, 2017

// Open Air Cinema + Fira Town + Oia Sunset \\
Hello again! I'm so excited to share my time in Greece with everyone! I have to start by saying that my visit to the Greek islands of Santorini and Naxos was, and probably will be for a long time, my favorite vacation ever because of the awe-inspiring scenery, consistently sunny weather, delicious food (especially in Naxos), warm hospitality, affordability and, of course, my adventurous travel buddy, Taylor!
We met up at the Athens airport on May 31st. He flew in from Dublin and I from Washington DC. Looking back, I consider it to be a small miracle that we made it to the same spot within five minutes of each other, as planned. We then took a short 40-minute flight to Santorini and hit the ground running. After dropping off our bags, our Airbnb host (Elias, whom I definitely recommend staying with!) helped us rent an ATV, which we then drove to Kamari Beach for dinner at Pinakio. Fair warning, the little clear beverage the waiter gives you upon arriving is NOT water!! Taylor thought it was and drank it like a shot...the look of surprise on his face was priceless. Apparently, you're supposed to sip it...so the waiter had a good laugh when he came back after a minute and Taylor's glass was empty. The drink is called Raki, an ancient Greek spirit made from the solid residue of the grape that often has a 90% alcohol content. Safe to say, sipping on it didn't make the experience any better, and that look of surprise reappeared on our faces every time we took another swig. Annddd that was our first and last experience with Raki.
We finished off the night with what ended up being one of our favorite parts of Santorini - the Open Air Cinema. The venue was enchanting and lively, with little twinkling lights and greenery everywhere you looked. However, I must agree with the 29% Rotten Tomatoes critic rating of the movie showing that night, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. Honestly, the trick to enjoying this film is to expect nothing (lol sounds harsh but seriously...). Despite the disappointing screenplay and questionable acting (sorry Cap'n Jack), the experience of just being in the venue was incredible, and I highly recommend checking the theater out!
The next day was filled with adventure...for one of us. Sadly, Taylor had to spend the majority of the time cooped up inside completing his applications to medical school -_-, but I took full advantage of the sun, ATV, and cobblestone walkways along the cliffs of the Caldera (the steep cliff side of the island with the white buildings built up the side) in Firostefani and Fira.
 The old town of Pyrgos
We ate sooo much good food over the course of the vacation, but I think King Neptune's vegetable risotto was my favorite meal! It's located in Oia, the most popular town on the island for dinner and sunset watching.
"Books are no more threatened by kindle than stairs by elevators" - Little bookstore in Oia where we found the first edition of The Hobbit for a small price of 15,000 euros (~ $16,725)! Don't worry, though. That small piece of twine was keeping this treasure nice and safe on the shelf of the Atlantis bookstore. :/

p.s. // A couple of tips from our first day-and-a-half that will hopefully be useful if you're planning a trip to the Greek islands during the summer:
Do:
1. Ask your host to help you hire a form of transportation when you arrive - not necessary to do this beforehand.
2. Go to Kamari Beach to catch a movie at the Open Air Cinema, but check their website for movie showings first. There is only one per night, so you should get there early to reserve a seat, especially if you're in Santorini during high season (end of June-end of August). It was 8 euros per-person when we went.
3. Always bring a sweater or wear long sleeves if your staying out past sunset...it can get surprisingly cool at night.
4. Wear some type of eyewear when driving the ATV! Taylor always wore his sunglasses (even at night). When he didn't, he got a bunch of dust in his eyes and couldn't see. Sight is an important part of driving, people!
Don't:
1. Don't take a 5.5 hour ferry between Santorini and Athens...it's worth it to pay for the quick flight if you can. There are faster ferries than Blue Star (the most popular ferry company), but they cost about the same as flying and won't be as quick. The biggest advantage to taking the ferry is that the cost doesn't go up much as the departure date arrives, and you're almost guaranteed to find a seat because they can fit so many people. Therefore, you have flexibility in booking up to a few minutes beforehand, if that's what you prefer.
2. Don't wait to buy sunscreen in Greece. You're definitely going to need it, and it'll cost you about 20 dollars for a 12 oz bottle at a mini market in town.
3. Try to decide where you will eat dinner before you go out so that you don't have to browse the menus outside restaurants. The restaurants' hosts on both islands were very aggressive in trying to convince us to stay for a meal each time we even glanced at a menu.

Thanks for stopping by! Santorini Day 2 coming soon!
